The Benin Bronze
The British troops and the brass plaques...
The Benin bronze…
Benin city was part of the British empire from 1897 to 1960 , the group of sculptures made from brass and bronze were crafted in the 16th century in the kingdom of Benin.
Some pieces were made specifically for the alters of the past Oba’s(Kings) and Queen mothers. The cast brass plaques are one of the most well known Benin bronzes which represented an important record of the dynasties history.
The Benin bronzes were stolen during a loot by British troops when a British explorer went on an expedition in the kingdom of Benin .
The brass plaques and sculptures from the kingdom were represented in the early contacts with the Europeans and is now part of the British museums collection.
